Pedestrian Culture vs. Automotive Reliant Culture
I of course love cars. They are testaments to the creativity of humanity. Yet in the back of my mind I often feel a nagging worry that these great machines are somehow harming us. I don’t mean the effect they have on the environment (those claims have been called into serious question recently anyway) I’m referring to the fact that we have become far too reliant upon them to get us around.
I try to stay healthy, I do some yoga in the mornings then spend some time on the chin up bar, but even so, when I have to run out to the store to pick up something extra for dinner I don’t think twice about hopping on my car. Recently this has begun to worry me in that I now notice how dependant I am upon my car.
In the news recently we often see a lot of talk about the obesity crisis here in America. I usually don’t pay much attention but when I compare America to other countries that are not so car dependant and see how the average person in such countries is much more slim and healthy looking it worries me. Of course diet is the most important aspect of the obesity problem, fast food and instant meals are the scourge of the modern age, but lifestyle overrules all other factors, including diet. People don’t walk enough, they sit all day in an office, then sit all night watching tv and sit in their cars in between. It’s no wonder the average American grows in size every year. Although as I said I love cars, I feel we need to use them as a tool, not as a crutch.
